Dates and times in UTC. The phase is the same everywhere on Earth; only the local clock differs.

Why the Moon changes shape

The Moon is always half lit by the Sun. What changes is how much of that sunlit half faces us as the Moon goes around Earth, once every 29.5 days.

After the new moon a thin crescent appears in the evening sky and grows (waxes) to first quarter and full. After full, it shrinks (wanes) and rises later each night, until it is only a crescent before dawn.

A supermoon is a full moon near the closest point of the Moon's orbit: about 7% bigger and 15% brighter than an average full moon, which is hard to notice by eye but lovely low on the horizon.
