Privacy policy

In short

You can use every tool on OrbitNight without an account. We do not sell personal information, and we collect only what a feature needs to work.

What we collect

  • Usage statistics: the page viewed, its language, phone or desktop, the website you came from, page speed and error messages. No cookie or identifier is used, so these figures cannot be linked to you. Daily totals are kept for up to 400 days.
  • Your location: used to work out which satellites pass over you. It is saved only in your own browser. Your exact location (from GPS or typed coordinates) is never sent to our server: your browser first turns it into the nearest city, or into an area of about 50 km for the light identifier and past Starlink trains. Those requests are used once and not stored. For cloud forecasts, that city's location is sent to MET Norway (the Norwegian weather service).
  • Account (optional): if you sign in with Google, Kakao or Naver, we receive your account ID at that service, your name and your email address, and we store them with your favorite satellites and your sighting log (the satellites you mark as seen, when, and any note you add).
  • Pass alerts (optional): the push address your browser gives us and the alerts your browser planned (satellite name, time and direction of each pass). Pass times are worked out in your browser, so your location is not sent.
  • Aurora alerts (optional): the push address and the aurora travel spots you picked from our list (for example Tromsø). Your own location is not sent.

Cookies and storage on your device

  • Language: remembers the language you picked (1 year).
  • Sign-in: keeps you signed in (30 days), plus a short-lived cookie used only during sign-in.
  • Browser storage: your location, the places you save, favorites when not signed in, and camera-finder settings stay on your device and can be cleared in your browser settings.

Advertising and analytics by Google

This site may show ads served by Google AdSense and measure visits with Google Analytics. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com), and read how Google uses this information at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent first.

Who else handles the data

  • The company hosting the site's servers stores the data above on our behalf.
  • The push service built into your browser (for example Google, Mozilla or Apple) delivers pass alerts.
  • Google, Kakao or Naver handle the sign-in you choose under their own privacy policies.

Information sent abroad

If Google Analytics or AdSense is enabled on this site, the following is sent to Google LLC in the United States:

  • What: the page viewed, browser and device details, your IP address, and cookie or advertising identifiers.
  • When and how: over the internet, each time a page loads.
  • Why: Google Analytics measures visits; Google AdSense shows and measures ads.
  • How long: Analytics data for up to 14 months; advertising data under Google's own retention rules.
  • How to refuse: block cookies in your browser, install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on, or turn off personalized ads in Google's Ads Settings. Every tool on the site keeps working.

How long we keep it, and how to delete it

  • Account: until you delete it. Use "Delete account" in the account menu (top right); your name, email, favorites and sighting log are deleted immediately.
  • Pass alerts: until you turn them off, or 30 days after your browser last planned them. Sent alerts are cleared within two days.
  • Aurora alerts: until you turn them off or your browser drops the push address.
  • You may also ask us to see, correct or delete your information, or to stop processing it, using the contact below. We reply within 10 days.

How information is deleted

  • When the retention period ends or you ask for deletion, the information is deleted from the database without delay, in a way that cannot be restored.
  • Daily backups are kept for 14 days, so a deleted record is gone from every backup within 14 days.

Sharing with others

We do not give your personal information to anyone else, except where a law requires it (for example a lawful request from an investigating authority).

How we protect it

  • Every connection to the site is encrypted (HTTPS).
  • Only the operator can reach the server, with a key-based login; the database is not open to the internet.
  • Sign-in cookies are stored only as a one-way hash, and we keep no passwords (sign-in goes through Google, Kakao or Naver).
  • We collect as little as possible: no precise location, no phone number, no payment details.
