Weather satellites

29 in orbit

Weather satellites watch clouds, storms, sea temperature and the air from two kinds of orbit. Geostationary ones (GOES, Himawari, Chollian, Elektro) hover 35,786 km above one spot on the equator and image a whole hemisphere every few minutes.

Polar ones (NOAA, MetOp, Fengyun, Meteor) fly about 800 km up from pole to pole and see the whole Earth twice a day in sharper detail. Hams receive their pictures directly with a simple antenna.
