GPS and navigation satellites

293 in orbit

Your phone works out where it is from the signals of navigation satellites about 20,000 km up. Four systems cover the whole world: the American GPS, the European Galileo, the Chinese BeiDou and the Russian GLONASS.

A receiver needs at least four satellites in view; modern phones use all four systems together, so dozens are usually overhead at once.
